It’s English Tourism Week – the perfect excuse to explore, sip, and celebrate everything our beautiful country has to offer. And there’s no better place to do it than Stratford-upon-Avon, a town where history, culture, and quirky discoveries collide.
From cobbled streets and historic theatres to riverside walks and centuries-old pubs, Stratford is bursting with experiences that make every visit special. And yes, we’re proud to be part of that story too.
A Decade of Craft in the Heart of Town
Last year, Shakespeare Distillery celebrated its 10-year anniversary, marking a decade of crafting award-winning gin and rum and welcoming visitors to discover the story behind the spirits. In addition to our Distillery, located at 1 High Street is our town centre space ‘Judith’s School of Spirits’ which blends history and modern craft in one place. It’s the former home of Judith Shakespeare, daughter of William Shakespeare, and her husband, Thomas Quiney, a vintner who sold wine on the premises.
Here, visitors can:
- Walk in the footsteps of the Shakespeare family
- Try guided gin and rum tastings
- Pick up locally produced gifts, from our spirits to local wines, beers and honey
It’s part of the rich tapestry of Stratford-upon-Avon – and was even a former gaol once upon a time!
Stratford’s Historic and Quirky Corners
There’s so much more to explore in town beyond the distillery and the famous landmarks:
- Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall – Step back in time to where young William learned his letters and Latin, and a few inevitable lessons learned the hard way! Marvel at the unique wall paintings in this 600 year old building.
- Holy Trinity Church – Set beside the River Avon, this beautiful church is the final resting place of Shakespeare himself, along with members of his family, including his wife Anne Hathaway. His son Hamnet, immortalised in the recent film adaptation of Maggie O’Hara’s book, was baptised here and has a commemorative rowan tree planted in the graveyard.
- Royal Shakespeare Theatre – Even if you don’t catch a show, the theatre is worth a stroll to admire its striking architecture and riverside setting. It also offers regular free exhibitions, a coffee shop and restaurant.
- The Garrick Inn – One of the oldest pubs in town, dating back to the 16th century (ghost stories included at no extra cost).
- Scenic River Avon Walks – Follow the river through town and spot little surprises like miniature gardens, weeping willows, and Stratford’s unofficial feline residents.
Fun local fact: One of the oldest surviving houses, Harvard House, was built in 1596 – yes, the same family who went on to help found Harvard University across the pond!
Local trivia: The River Avon has inspired more than just poets; it once powered the town’s mills, and you can still spot remnants of the old water wheels if you know where to look.
